The Boeing MD-80 is a quiet, fuel-efficient twinjet. Its FAA certification was awarded in August of 1980 and started operation in October of 1980.

There were 4 variants of this model, these are the MD-81, MD-82, MD-83, and MD-88. The operators of this aircraft vary from the biggest foreign and domestic trunk carriers to latest airlines and charter operators. The first airlines to operate this model were Swissair and Austrian Airlines but American Airlines operates the biggest quantity of MD-80s with a fleet of 275. There were also 35 MD-80 aircrafts were built and are being operated in the People's Republic of China.
