B737-400 is considered short to medium range airliner.
The 737-400 blueprint was introduced in 1985 to fill the disparity between the 737-300 and the 757-200, and content with the Airbus A320. It extended the 737-300 an additional 10 ft (3.45 m) to accomodate up to 168 passengers.
The aircraft started operation on September of 1988 in which the first customer to use it was Piedmont Airlines. They have ordered 25 kinds of this aircraft. This version is a new larger capacity model compared to the 737-300. The key change of the 737-400 compared to the smaller -300 is an extended fuselage.
